The Chisholm Trail

The Chisholm Trail ran north from Red River Station across the Indian territories and then entered Kansas, crossing the Arkansas River at Wichita to Abilene, Texas.

By 1869 the main trails were well defined. The best known was the Chisholm Trail.

Indian trader Jesse Chisholm first marked the famous cattle trail for his wagons. At the end of the extended Chisholm Cattle Trail a stockyard was built.

In five years from 1867 to 1872 more than three million head of cattle were driven up the Chisholm Trail from Oklahoma to Abilene, Texas.

By 1870 thousands of Texas Longhorn cattle were being driven over the Chisholm Trail to the Union Pacific Railroad shipping center at Abilene, Texas.

In 1871 Abilene Texas could have as many as 5,000 cowboys at a time in town on payday it was party time. Abilene became known as a rough town in the west.
