Applegate brothers

The Applegate Trail was the southern Trail of Oregon. It was blazed in 1846 as an alternate trail to Oregon. Three Applegate brothers and their families come to Oregon on the original Trail of Oregon during the first major migration in 1843. On the Columbian River just outside The Dalles, Oregon, one of the rafts capsized drowning two sons of the brothers and an uncle. This tragedy made the brothers more determined to save others from similar grief and find a safer way to the Oregon Territory.

By the spring of 1846 the brothers Lindsay, Jesse and Charles Applegate had settled, planted crops, and built their cabins. Still determined to find a better way for emigrants. Deciding that Charles would stay with the family at their Willamette Valley home near Rickreall, Oregon, Lindsay and Jesse set out. With Levi Scott and ten others a scouting party known as South Road Expedition was on its way June of 1846.
