The California Trail

Established in 1841, The California Trail was the overland route that brought an estimated quarter million emigrants to the State of California, "The Golden State" as it was called. Following the same path as Trail of Oregon, but extending on to California from various points in southwest Wyoming and southern Idaho. When going to the Reno, Nevada area, it was necessary to split into several different trails for a faster approach to Sacramento, California. Like its counterpart, Trail of Oregon, there was never really a single trail, but a network of interwoven trails. The floodgates opened following the discovery of gold in California. According to statistics, over 70,000 emigrants used The California Trail in 1849 and 1850. Today, railroad and modern highways follow the corridors of The California Trail.
