It is nicknamed "Dixie". A large area around St. George is located in the valley of the Virgin River and its tributaries.

St. George and Utah's Dixie have the highest average temperatures in the state and very mild winters.

The eastern portion of the county, includes the spectacular Zion National Park, and is part of the Colorado Plateau.

The western portion of the county lies in the Great Basin.

The lowest point in the state of Utah is by the Beaver Dam Wash (2,350 feet), near the county's southwest corner.

The Pine Valley Mountains in the north part of the county have elevations of up to about 10,000 feet.
