Sacagawea Dollars - The Lewis and Clark Expeditions
The Sacagawea Dollars - Coins - Gold Dollars - Gold Coins
United States Mint
The United States Mint has announced the design for a new dollar coin in it's "Fall of 1999". It is a conceptual likeness of Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian woman. She was an important member of The Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The Gold dollar depicts her, in three quarter profile, with her infant son Jean Baptiste on her back. The reverse side has a soaring American Bald Eagle, encircled by 17 stars, one for each state in the Union of 1804.
Production of the Sacagawea Dollar began First Strike Ceremonies in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 1999. The coin was not readily available until January 2000. The Denver Mint production began in February 2000.
Gold Proof of Sacagawea Dollar
On July 23, 1999, twelve 22 carat gold Sacagawea Dollars soared into space aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. How fitting that was, as the first female commander, Eileen Collins, was guiding it.
The mint had 39 of the gold versions made from fine .9167 gold.
The coins were dated 2000 and carried the "W", Mintmark, indicating they were struck at the West Point (N.Y.) facility.
After picking out the best 12 of the 39 coins, the others were destroyed. The 12 were placed aboard the Columbia for their journey into space. After the flight the 12 gold dollars were transported to the Fort Knox, Kentucky Gold Bullion Depository.
