Modena, Utah

Modena, Utah is a small community of Iron County in the southwestern 1/4 of the state of Utah. Modena, was once a booming railroad and mining town with a population of nearly 3,500.
Off highway 56 heading west from Cedar City towards the Nevada border, it is secluded and filled with wild life.
Wild horses, burros, elk, deer, and other big game are easily seen from the nearby roads and trails. The mountainous areas are home to some of the largest wild horse herds in the western United States. Wild horses and burros are sometimes caught and then placed for adoption. The information on how you too can own one, may be obtained from the BLM in Cedar City, Utah. Elk and deer herds can be seen from the main highway as well. Bald Eagles migrate to this area every winter and are often seen sitting on telephone poles or in trees. The sight of these great birds is a fantastic and limited opportunity for sure.

Modena, lost its luster of yesteryear and has dwindled to a community of about 50 people now. Although, many gold and silver mining claims are still being worked, the people are scattered around the area and not living in town. Modena, has a small convenience store with grocery items, gasoline, a post office, and café. The open hours are short but, the lady who runs the place is very nice and worth going in to talk to. Many people from around the area come here to get their groceries and gas up their vehicles, as it is closer than other towns. Several very old buildings, a railroad station, and other small businesses are here.

Heading north from Modena is the Modena cemetery, Hamblin Valley, State Line mine, and in the mountain range, White Mountain. Traveling west on highway 56 from Modena are the small towns of Pioche, Panaca, and Caliente, Nevada. From the junction in Panaca, you can go north to Ely, Nevada or south to Caliente, then, on to area 51, down through Alamo and in to Las Vegas. East along highway 56 are the small communities of Beryl Junction, (12 miles) New Castle, (23 miles), and Cedar City, (50 miles), where Interstate 15 heading north to Salt Lake City, and south to Las Vegas, Nevada is accessible. At Beryl Junction, highways 18, north to Beryl town, and highway 56, south to the Utah Dixie in St. George, Utah, intersect.
On highway 18 heading south is Enterprise, Utah, (12 miles from the junction), further is the site of the Mountain Meadow Massacre, (30 miles), and St. George, (55 miles), in Washington County. Interstate 15 to Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada is accessible in St. George.
