National Scenic Trails System Act

In 1968, Congress passed the National Trails System Act, which provided for federal aid for the support and maintenance of the Appalachian Trail, and for the creation of a national system of trails. Today, the Federal Government maintains over 20 National Historic and Scenic Trails across the United States, in addition to numerous Recreational Trails in National and State Parks throughout the country.

Appalachian National Scenic Trails (1968)
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a 2,167-mile footpath along the ridge crests and across the major valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in north Georgia. The trail traverses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.

Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (1968)
The Pacific Crest Trail stretches from the Mexican to Canadian borders along the mountainous crest of the Cascades and Sierra Nevada.
