National Park Service - Trails System

The Old Spanish Trail was designated as a National Historic Trail.
After much time the National Park Service assessed the historic significance of The Old Spanish Trail and determined it to be included in the National Trails System. The study discussed the trail in great detail and recognized it as an important part of our nation's history.

On Dec. 4, 2003, President George W. Bush signed S-1946 - The Old Spanish Trail Recognition Act, into law. The bill officially designates the trail as a National Historic Trail, putting it among only 20 trails that have received national recognition by Congress since 1968.
