Removal of the Cherokee Nation - Cherokee Trail or The Trail of Tears

In 1838 Army troops under the command of General Winfield Scott began rounding up the Cherokee and moving them into stockades in the southeastern states. The stockades served only as temporary housing for the Cherokee and other Indians, as one by one they were all removed to the west.

The Delaware, Ottawa, Shawnee, Pawnee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole were removed.
In all, nearly ninety thousand Indians were relocated.
An estimated four thousand Indians died from disease, phenomena, ill treatment, colds hunger, and exposure.

The journey became and eternal memory as The Trail of Tears.

Throughout the early part of the 19th century, The Cherokee Trail or The Trail of Tears was the main connecting link between Arkansas and the Platte River system, and then along the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies, though now commonly referred to as The Cherokee Trail, it was throughout its history a trail of many names.
