Prairie Buffalo

In search of the real, Old West:
How much more Old West can you get than buffalo?

These majestic animals roamed the prairie until near extinction in the 1800's.
Today Bison, or Prairie Buffalo have recovered to nearly a quarter of a million strong. National parks, and private ranchers have helped them to come back from sure extinction. This has been achieved by much care for these animals.
It is important to keep the herd in balance with the amount of grassland that is available and maintaining a variety of management techniques.
One of these techniques is the fall roundup time. All potential excess buffalo are sorted. Calves are branded, the herd inventoried and vaccinations given. Two-year-old bulls are sorted for sale. All surpluses of buffalo are checked for overall good health and tested for disease.
After sorting all of the buffalo for sale and putting them into groups, the sale can begin. Buffalo are sold to private individuals from the US and Canada. Some of them are used for breeding, while others are used for meat.
Some of them are used just for a private hunting ranches, but that is another tale from the trail.
